Bridge Rats convoy is tribute to biker Brian

BIKERS hit the road to pay tribute to a much-loved friend and help a charity.

A convoy of more than 150 bikes travelled through Calderdale on a fund-raising ride in memory of Brian Buchan, of Holywell Green.

Brian, a founder member of the Bridge Rats bikers' club in Todmorden, died last year from a brain haemorrhage. He was 58.

The club, with support from other groups, organised the ride from the Kershaw House pub in Luddenden Foot to Brighouse Sports Centre to raise money for the West Yorkshire Forget-Me-Not Trust.

His widow Janette, who led the convoy on a trike with her daughter Janine, said: "Brian would have been shocked by how many people have come.

"We're so proud of Brian. He was a real family man."

She thanked everyone who had helped organise the event and turned out to support it.

Jayne English, one of the organisers, said they were pleased with how many people had brought their bikes.

"We've had people coming from all over, there are people from across Yorkshire here," she said.

"We choose a different charity every year and this year we're raising money for the Forget-Me-Not Trust which is building a children's hospice.

"We wanted to do it in Brian's memory. He would have approved."

Brian shared his passion for bikes with his wife, who he met when they were both aged 11 at the former Ovenden Secondary Modern School, Halifax.

He loved being surrounded by his family – daughter Janine, son Martyn and his wife Helen, grandchildren Regan and Holly, mother Dorothy and brother, Ronald.

Brian trained as a mechanic and worked at Marshalls Group Services, Elland, where Janette also works.

He was the social secretary of the Bridge Rats and had owned several motorbikes.

He bought his wife the three-seater trike, on which she led the convoy, for her 50th birthday.
