Builders try their hand in the kitchen at cooking school

A BUNCH of Bob the Builders swapped spanners for spatulas at The Cooking School, Dean Clough, Halifax.

Bosses at contractors Nethercoats treated the hard-working group to a cookery course after they successfully completed a stunning fitting-out job at The Cooking School.

Last time the men were on site it was for wiring and grouting. This time they had to worry about slicing their shallots and mixing their muffin mixture.

The course was led by resident chef Matthew Benson-Smith and was created specifically with the Halifax-based builders in mind.

Executive director of The Cooking School, Anita Cormac, said: "Builders and joiners aren't really known for their healthy eating lifestyles and that is understandable when they work and eat on site most days with limited access to fresh food.

"We wanted to devise a team-building course to give them skills they could take away and really make a difference to their daily diet.

"We wanted to encourage them to have a go at preparing something easy but fresh and healthy, rather than reaching for a microwave meal at the end of the day."

The group produced a range of meals including fruity muffins, ultimate barbecue burgers, spicy wedges, "berried" treasure and chicken ruby.

Anita said: "By the end of the day we wanted the team to know more about choosing fresh ingredients, eating fewer processed foods and to limit their salt and sugar intake."

Helen Thain, Nethercoats' finance director, said: "They weren't quite sure what they were letting themselves in for – but they had a wonderful day."
