Bullseye! Archer Geoff still hitting the spot after 50 years

A 78-YEAR-OLD archer has been presented with a special award for 50 years of shooting arrows.

Geoff Taylor has been honoured for his contributions to the sport – the first person to receive a new countywide gong.

He was presented with the Yorkshire Award by the Yorkshire Archery Association to acknowledge his outstanding service to the Phoenix Bowmen of Halifax since he became a founding member 30 years ago.

He said: "Experience can help you improve but it doesn't always work like that," said the former newsagent of Sowerby New Road, Sowerby Bridge. "I'm just happy if I hit the target these days.

"It's a great honour. Archery is something I love doing. It's a lot of fun. I'm reasonably fit and I have a lightweight bow so I don't plan on stopping any time soon."

Tim Mason, secretary of Phoenix, said: "Geoff has taken on every role in the club during the last 30 years and done them diligently and well.

"The club is in good shape now, largely thanks to Geoff's hard work."
