Burning rubber and roaring engines at radio-controlled car race

BLISTERING speeds, the unmistakable smell of engine oil and the deafening sound of cars roaring around the track could only mean one thing – the start of the racing season.

But the cars whipping around the Halifax Track, at Stainland Road, West Vale, were not Formula One motors.

Teams from across the UK travelled to Calderdale to race radio-controlled model cars.

This weekend saw the first round of the British Radio Car Association competition, with around 50 competitors racing 1/8th-scale nitro-powered cars.

David Dransfield, secretary of the Yorkshire Radio Controlled Model Car Racing Club, which is based at Halifax Track, said: "These cars can reach speeds of up to 80mph on the straight here.

"They are the Formula One of model car racing."

Halifax Track was custom built around 10 years ago and 20,000 was spent on resurfacing it last year.

Chris Edwards, of Halifax, has been racing for around 18 years.

He said: "It can be quite an expensive hobby but it is very enjoyable especially if you are interested in the engineering aspect of it."
