Calderdale has much to offer new bank, council chiefs tell HBOS

TOP-LEVEL talks between council chiefs and HBOS have taken place to try to limit the impact locally on thousands of expected job losses.

Shane O'Riordain, general manager for group communications at HBOS, met Calderdale Council chief executive Owen Williams and newly elected council leader Stephen Baines. They will continue talking over the coming months as the pending Lloyds TSB takeover of HBOS gathers pace.

Councillor Baines said: "Our discussion was very helpful and it has confirmed my belief that Calderdale has a great deal to offer the newly formed bank when it is expected to be endorsed by shareholders later this year.

"The skills and talents of Calderdale's HBOS workforce should be seen as central to how the bank operates in the future.

"To ensure that this happens, Calderdale Council will continue to work in partnership with both Lloyds TSB and HBOS."

Councillor Baines said he was grateful for the meeting at a time of momentous change for HBOS.

Mr O'Riordain said HBOS had made a clear commitment to keep colleagues and the wider community updated on any details as soon as they become known.

"Discussions are very much in their infancy and will develop over the coming weeks and months and we will ensure that we keep an open and honest dialogue," he said.

"We welcome Calderdale Council's involvement and recognise that it, along with our other key stakeholders, have a very important role to play in this process."

A spokesmann for Lloyds TSB said group chief executive Eric Daniels had yet to fix a date to visit Halifax.
