Car park planned for old fire station

A FIRE station which has been standing empty for two years looks set to be demolished and the site turned into a temporary car park.

The building in Hangingroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge, was erected in 1965 and closed when the retained fire fighting crew of nine was merged with the nearby Mytholmroyd crew.

Developers Eshton Gregory were given planning permission a year ago to put two shops on the site with nine apartments above.

It was rumoured that one of the shops might be taken over by Marks & Spencer.

But the Eshton Gregory is now seeking approval from Calderdale Council to use the site as a temporary car park for up to 38 vehicles for the next five years.

"The vacant building is unattractive and detracts from the town and specifically the conservation area," according to planning agents Sanderson Weatherall.

"It is proposed to surface the site with hardcore, put up a fence and areas of planting."

The application is expected to be considered by the council at the end of January.
