Cash break for Kerbside

KERBSIDE Calderdale has received a financial boost from the Community Foundation for Calderdale.

A grant of 5,800 will enable Kerbside to take a group of volunteers and people with learning difficulties on a working holiday in Devon.

The 15 people involved in the Wash and Grow project will be attending workshops on computer use, photography, fitness and wildlife, and helping to clear litter from some of the beaches around Woolacombe.

"It is fantastic opportunity for our trainees to get away from it all, extend their skills and do something to help improve the environment," said organiser Fran Watson. "We have been planning this for some time but without the support of the community foundation, for which we are really grateful, it would have remained a pipe dream."

The Wash and Grow team is involved in processing the recyclable materials which Kerbside collects from about 25,000 homes between Todmorden and Halifax.

After cleaning and repairing clothes at the Luddenden Foot depot, they sell them on a stall at Hebden Bridge market.

"Running the stall gives members a real sense of achievement, as they learn useful, practical skills and get real results," said Fran, who is the Kerbside training officer.

The community foundation's assistant marketing co-ordinator, Louise French, said: "Kerbside provides many services for our community and this grant will give the group a chance to have different experiences, give them a sense of independence and a chance to enjoy themselves in a new and exciting place.

"Everyone involved is very excited and looking forward to the visit with high hopes for a brilliant week."

The foundation has been working with Kerbside since 2003.

Its funding has become all the more important since Kerbside's contract with the council to collect recyclables came to an end this month.

However, Kerbside has decided to continue in business, at least until January.
