CCTV could beat the fly-tippers

SECURITY cameras could be used as part of Calderdale Council's war on fly-tippers.

The cameras are just one measure the council is considering in the battle to clear up the district.

Every year the council spends thousands of pounds getting rid of illegally dumped waste.

Between April 2007 and January 2008, it spent 107,000 cleaning up Calderdale.

A spokesman for the council said: "There are a number of fixed CCTV cameras that the environmental health services enforcement team has access to.

"The council also has provision to deploy remote, mobile, stand-alone cameras."

Councillor Graham Reason, portfolio holder for health and social care, said: "Calderdale Council will not tolerate littering of any kind.

"Fly-tipping is illegal and there is no excuse for this kind of behaviour. We are putting in place a number of measures to prevent this kind of behaviour.

"If you have a large amount of waste then you can visit one of Calderdale's numerous household waste recycling sites."

Last year the council issued 30 fines for domestic waste being dumped and 23 for commercial waste.

There were 609 fines for littering.
