Chance to have your say on how to ease traffic snarl-ups

RESIDENTS and motorists are to be asked for their views on spending around £1 million on altering and upgrading the most congested junctions in Brighouse.

Experts have suggested a variety of measures, such as moving bus stops, painting more road markings and altering the timing of traffic lights.

Regeneration and development panel chairman Barry Collins said: "Bigger changes might be possible, including changing the layout on the Wakefield Road junction.

"Over the next few months we intend to consult people in Brighouse and Rastrick about what they think will be the best solution.

"Brighouse has been designated a principal town for housing and employment and we need to look at the implications of that, the effect on the public transport and the infrastructure."

Councillor Collins (Lab, Mixenden and Illingworth) said any future redevelopment of the Sugden's Mill site in the heart of Brighouse would have an effect on traffic.

The council last week was refused permission to compulsory purchase the landmark former flour mill after a long-running public inquiry.

"If people want to bring forward their own ideas for easing traffic problems, we would be pleased to hear from them," he said.

Councillor Peter Coles (Lib-Dem, Luddenden Foot) said that as well as asking the people through surveys and public meetings what they thought of the various options, it would be good for the scrutiny panel to go to Brighouse and listen to what they had to say.

Councillor Nick Yates (Lib-Dem, Brighouse) said: "Some good ideas have been put forward.

"But one issue that has been ignored and which would have a major effect on the town, is the possible closure of Mill Royd Street."

Nearly 1,000 cars alone travel cross the Tesco roundabout during rush hours, many on their way to and from the M62.
