Charity walk in memory of baby Hope

A COUPLE are marking the first anniversary of the stillbirth death of their daughter by organising a sponsored walk.

Gordon and Caroline Buckle were devastated to lose Hope on August 12.

"I was 40 weeks. The day before I was due I lost her," said Mrs Buckle, of Littlemoor Gardens, Illingworth, Halifax.

"We do not know why. A post-mortem didn't find any reason."

During their grief the couple found help through Sands – the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity – and on August 9 they will be joined by more than 30 family and friends on a three-mile walk around Ogden Water. Already 1,000 has been promised for Sands.

Mrs Buckle said the charity's website helped them.

"It was a source of information and had legal advice too," she said. "It was something new to us. We had never arranged a funeral and there was lots of information on the forum from people who had been through similar tragedies."

Mrs Buckle said during her pregnancy she heard nothing about stillbirths but was told about cot deaths, which are less common. The charity is pushing for more regular scans for women in the latter stages of pregnancy.

"Hope was found to be a little bit smaller than expected.

"She was not growing properly and a scan would have picked it up," she said.

Mr and Mrs Buckle both work at Car Care Plan, Thornbury, near Bradford, where a company barbecue raised 260 for the cause.

"We have had lots of support.

"On the actual anniversary of Hope's death we will have a family meal and release lanterns," she said.

"Hopefully, we will have more family but she will never be forgotten."
