Christine shows her flower power
CHRISTINE Thorpe has been brightening up the aisles of a Halifax church with her colourful flower arrangements for 31 years.
Now her work will be on display for all to see at flower festival at St Jude's Church, Savile Park, from October 24 to 26.
Christine, a church warden, of Bell Hall Terrace, Halifax, said: "About 30 years ago the vicar asked me to take on the job of arranging the church flowers.
"I explained I had no experience but his reply was 'Do them to the glory of God', and that is just what I have done."
Christine's beautiful displays sometimes take her several hours and can cost around 150.
She said: "I decorate the altar, the war memorial and do a big display on the font – that's what I'm known for.
"I get flowers from florists, market stalls or supermarkets, wherever I see something to fit in with my colour scheme.
"At harvest time I can really go to town because of all the glorious colours."
Christine is a retired legal cashier and has never had a flower arranging lesson.
"It was like a lifeline and I carried on from there."
Christine will soon step down from her duties as church warden after five years and thought the flower festival would be a good way to end her service. She will, however, continue to arrange the church flowers.
The festival will include displays from local contributers Sowerby Bridge Flower Friends and pupils from Holy Trinity Primary School.
