Colour and culture for the Fringe

AN art gallery in a caravan, a poetry reading in the woods, and a dance class in a church hall.

The full programme for the Hebden Bridge Fringe Festival has been unveiled – and, with more than 60 local artists holding a variety of different events at a variety of different venues, organisers are promising an "explosion of culture."

The 16 day celebration will see art, dance, music, literature readings and comedy being staged in the town's shops, cafes, pubs – as well as perhaps more unusual places including Calder Holmes Park, Hebden Bridge Methodist Church Hall and St George's Square.

Alice Hutt, organiser, said: "The Fringe is all about giving everyone an opportunity to make art, make noise, develop their creativity or just dress up and brighten the streets."

The Fringe, now in its second year, will run alongside the more established Hebden Bridge Arts Festival from June 26 to July 12 and will specialise in showcasing local artists and staging workshops for people to get involved with.

Among the offerings will be a graffiti jam at Calder Holmes Park, a mystical poetry odyssey which will take in the area's countryside and woodland, a laughter club at Nutclough Studios and dance classes at Central Street School.

A mobile arts caravan – nicknamed Martini – will tour the town's streets encouraging people to get involved.

Sean Kavanagh, another organiser, said: "Last year was a great success to say it was a pilot event but this year we want even better, even bigger.

"We want everyone in the valley to be touched by this explosion of culture and colour."

He said a Friends of the Fringe scheme had been launched in which people could give a set amount for discounts off all events.
