Community and Environment Awards: Courier's night for heroes
REFUSE collectors and schools and home helpers were among the winners at the Courier inaugural Community and Environment Awards last night.
Trophies were given in 10 categories rewarding groups who often go unrecognised.
The big winner was recycling firm Kerbside, which took two prizes. The company was named best recycling initiative, while worker Robert Elliot was crowned green champion.
In the community section Home Start Calderdale – a group that trains volunteers to help families with special needs – was crowned charity of the year, while Brighouse Rest Centre manager Holly Bottomley was voted the district's outstanding individual.
The black-tie evening, held in partnership with Comm-unity Foundation for Calderdale and sponsored by HBOS, took place at Bertie's, Elland.
Courier editor John Furbisher said: "The night was about giving a much-deserved showcase for the groups and individuals who make Calderdale the caring and conscientious place we all know and love."
