Controversial cyclepath up for debate

A PUBLIC meeting is being held tonight to discuss a new planning application for a controversial cycleway alongside a disused railway corridor.

The meeting organised by Calderdale Council is about plans to create the Greenway Path alongside West Vale Viaduct. The original plans for the Grade II listed viaduct were refused earlier in the year.

The original application was shelved after fears that a new path would affect wildlife.

Under a woodland management scheme barriers would be put in place to stop cars or motorbikes using the path.

Councillor David Kirton, spokesman for regeneration and development, fully supports the plans.

He said: "This scheme would create a spectacular off-road experience, ranging from beautiful woodland to the panoramic views offered by West Vale's iconic viaduct.

"The route will form a link to the National Cycle Network, as well as encourage people to use cycling and walking as healthy, green forms of travel. It also offers an alternative mode of access under the Safer Routes to School programme with three schools, St Patrick's, West Vale Primary and Brooksbank Secondary all within usable distance."

The meeting will be held at St Patrick's Catholic Primary School, Hullen Edge Road, at 7.30pm.
