Council agrees to put £1.75m into Piece Hall revamp kitty

COUNCIL leaders have agreed to support a £7 million project to develop the Piece Hall.

The scheme would transform the historic Halifax building into a town square, with space for restaurants, bistros, high-end shops and visitor centre.

The deadline for the bid to the regional Heritage Lottery Fund is September 14. After this it will be forwarded for national consideration by September 30.

Calderdale Council Cabinet has now agreed to set aside 1.75 million in match funding to allow the scheme to go ahead.

It would make the Piece Hall the centre-piece of the town's regeneration programme, which is gathering pace with projects including Somerset House, the Shay stadium and the Broad Street leisure and retail centre.

Details of the proposals show the hall housing a centre for creative businesses, upmarket shops and a 4,000-seat amphitheatre.

But the biggest change would be to the courtyard which will become a fabulous town square with raked stone seating, a large multi-purpose performance area and a movable stage.

Although there is only one bid allowed from the Yorkshire and Humber region, the Piece Hall will have to compete with other projects from across the country.

Community services director Kersten England said: "After York Minster this is the most historically significant building in Yorkshire and Humber. In partnership with other organisations – Dean Clough, Eureka, the parish church, Square Chapel and the Courier – we have developed a strong proposal, which will breathe new life into the Piece Hall."

If the bid is successful, work would start in October 2012 and end in May 2014.
