Courier fixes it for mum of tragic Bobby to see David Gray
FOR most fans, David Gray's visit to Halifax's Victoria Theatre will be a chance to get close to their idol.
But for one mum it will bring back tearful memories.
Anne McCarthy's 17-year-old-son, Bobby McBride, battled the rare, devastating muscular disease dermatomyositis for more than a year. He died at St James's Hospital, Leeds, listening to his favourite David Gray song, Sail Away.
The Courier managed to get Anne and her partner, Dominic Gallacher, tickets for tonight's concert from Momentum PR.
Anne, 47, of Keighley Road, Illingworth, Halifax, said: "It's just wonderful. I can't wait to go. It will be a fantastic night for so many reasons but it will also be very emotional. I'm sure there will be a few tears.
"I'm a big fan of David Gray's too, so just like everyone else there I'll be enjoying his music."
Dominic first introduced Bobby to David Gray's music. "Bobby heard me playing his album White Ladder and from then on he was his favourite artist," he said.
"It will be a great night and we'll both be thinking of Bobby."
Bobby, a former pupil of The Ridings, Ovenden, Halifax, became ill 14 months before he died. Complications arose, causing both his lungs to collapse, and the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support machine was made.
Anne described the last moments of his life: "It was 8pm when we switched his life support off and for 15 minutes we kissed him, held him and talked to him.
"We put his iPod on and put in his earphones. He listened to David Gray's Sail Away for those last precious minutes. After all he'd been through, he went peacefully but we have been left completely numb."
