'Courier's Join Our Club campaign inspired me to shed the pounds'
MICHELLE Dean says if she can get healthy, anyone can.
Inspired by the Courier's Join Our Club campaign, the mum-of-two of Westbury Croft, King Cross, Halifax, is starting a health kick.
For every pound she loses, she wants sponsors to donate 1 to charity.
"I feel better already," she said. "My joints aren't sore any more and I no longer have to use a stick when I walk."
Michelle, 39, started putting on weight when she had to leave her job as a nurse because of a back injury.
Rushing to after-school events, she and her daughters would often end up eating takeaways, sometimes twice a week.
But when she saw the Courier's report on how obesity is costing Calderdale 53 million every year, she decided to take action.
Now she is walking her two dogs – Max and Scamp – four times a day and has swapped crisps and sweets for fruit and vegetables.
She has already lost 9lbs, and wants to lose six stone to get to her target weight of 11 stone.
"The dogs are great because I have to get up to walk them. You can't ignore them when they're stood by the door whining.
"My daughters are getting used to it now too. They're walking to and from school and I've been trying to encourage them to get into cooking.
"People say it's too expensive to eat healthily but if you add up all the money you spend on takeaways and sweets then it isn't."
The money she raises will be split between Overgate Hospice, Grace Baptist Church, Pellon, Halifax, and St Columba's Church at Highroad Well, Halifax.
The Courier's Join Our Club campaign is running all year and aimed to encourage more people to live healthier lifestyles.
We have launched a new section to our website so people can let others know how they are taking up the active challenge.
