Crimefighters recognised

CRIMEFIGHTERS who devote their spare time to West Yorkshire Police will be recognised this weekend.

As part of the nationally-organised Specials Weekend, the force's Special Constabulary will be working closely with PCSOs and regular officers to cut road accidents.

There are currently 386 Specials volunteering for West Yorkshire, all with the same powers as regular police officers.

Last year, the Specials contributed a total of 63,835 hours.

The theme for this year's weekend is road policing, and Special Constables will be taking part in operations aimed at reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured in crashes.

Chief Inspector Jane Booth of the force's local policing department, said: "By volunteering their free time, Special Constables really help to make a difference to people's lives."
