David Cameron visits Halifax: Tory leader backs HBOS jobs fight... and Gordon Brown's rescue package

TORY leader David Cameron has expressed support and concern for the 6,000-plus men and women employed in Calderdale by the Halifax.

And he has backed Gordon Brown's rescue package which will mean the Government taking a 41 per cent stake in the troubled bank, when it is takenover by Lloyds TSB.

He said; "It is extraordinary that taxpayers should be having to bail out the banks and I am sure it is very confusing and worrying for people in Halifax.

"But there is only one thing that would be worse and that would be to do nothing."

Mr Cameron was speaking to the Courier after a visit to the Halifax bank's office in Trinity Road.

He met a variety of staff including the chief executive of Halifax operations, Don Watkins. He then went on to speak to Conservative politicians, council leaders and businessmen at Halifax Town Hall.

"We didn't have to end up in this position," said Mr Cameron.

"Too many mortgages were given for the wrong properties, the banks made irresponsible decisions and politicians stood on the sidelines for too long.

"We can only hope that from today HBOS and the Halifax will be given a new start.

Mr Cameron said the people working at the Halifax were not the fat cat bankers but ordinary working people. "We want the business to be successful for them and their families."

Among those who met Mr Cameron was the Conservative prospective Parliamentary candidate for Halifax, Philip Allott, and the candidate for the Calder Valley, Coun Craig Whittaker.

Halifax businessman Roger Harvey told Mr Cameron that people were increasingly having to use their cash to pay their mortgages rather than high street shopping.

Calderdale Council chief executive Owen Williams said it was doing its best to help small businesses and suppliers by paying bills much faster than it had in the past.
