Decision day for mill plan

A REDUNDANT mill in the centre of Todmorden is on the way to being cleared to make way for 45 new homes.

There was huge opposition to the original plans for Adamroyd Mill, Burnley Road, when they were announced a year ago.

But Calderdale Council planning officers have recommended the scheme for approval when it goes before councillors on Tuesday.

Todmorden Town Council recommended approval as no viable use has been found for the mill, directly opposite the entrance to Centre Vale Park, to justify keeping it for industrial purposes.

Objector Nick Green said the weaving sheds could be pulled down but the three-storey mill could be turned into an innovation centre or an art college.

Others complained there are too many empty homes in the town and it should remain to help attract new jobs.

The plan includes three and four-bedroomed terraced homes, five-bed semi-detached houses and one and two bed apartments, up to three stories high.

The scheme also includes a bio-mass community heating system with boilers run off gas and woodchips.

The owner plans to relocate existing user, Rochdale Metal Units, to more modern premises in Todmorden, helping to safeguard more than 50 jobs.
