Disability charity celebrates Lottery Fund windfall
A DISABILITY charity is celebrating after winning a massive boost from the Big Lottery Fund towards a new volunteering scheme.
Scope Calderdale Community Outreach Service received 342,751 which will pay for disabled mentoring and volunteering for the next five years.
Peter Wardhaugh, service manager, said: "This money will go towards helping disabled people get involved in volunteering and mentoring in the community and acting as role models."
The charity, which receives some aid from local authorities and NHS Calderdale, has to obtain most of its funding thourgh grant applications and fund-raising.
"These grants make a huge difference financially but, more importantly, a huge difference in terms of the help we can deliver for disabled people," said Mr Wardhaugh. "I'm really pleased for the staff, the service, the volunteers and the customers.
The Calderdale Community Outreach Service has recently moved premises to the Quaker Meeting House, Clare Road, Halifax, and has changed its focus.
"We are now offering a much more community based service. Rather than solely bringing people on site we want to be out in the local area helping to raise awareness."
