Druggie raided club – and dad

A SERIAL burglar who raided a social club as well as his own father's home has been jailed.

Steven Smith, 24, of no fixed address, will serve more than two years in prison for the spate of burglaries.

Bradford Crown Court heard drug-user Smith sneaked into Bankfield Social Club, Huddersfield Road, Elland, on March 13 and stole cigarettes while secretary Steven Taylor slept upstairs.

A month later Smith targetted his family home on Thomas Street, Elland.

Gavin Howie, prosecuting, said: "Smith entered the house and at some point made his way upstairs. He took 80 out of a tin in the bedroom.

"He was caught when his fingerprints were found on the tin and the social club security grille."

Paul Fleming, for Smith, said he burgled the club after being told by another criminal that it was an easy target.

Mr Fleming said: "Drugs have caused this young man to lose his job and ruin relationships wth his girlfriend and family.

"They have brought him down to the depth where he is stealing from his own dad and from a club on other people's advice.

"He is now motivated to put drugs behind him and move on. There is a real possibility for change."

Smith pleaded guilty to the burglaries and was sentenced to two years and five months in prison.
