Elland band celebrates seven music awards...

Elland Silver Youth Band became Entertainment Champions of Great Britain at the Action Medical Research Entertainment Championship of Great Britain at the Opera House Theatre, Blackpool.

Murray Greig, Principal trumpet of Opera North, put together a stunning arrangement of Bizet's Opera Carmen for the band.

Samantha Harrison, musical director of the band, led them to a five point lead an amazing performance. Soprano soloist Sophie Greig was dressed as Carmen, flugel horn player Owen Hicks as Don Hose, solo trombone player Daniel Eddison as Escamilla the Toreador, the orchestra and conductor in full dinner suits, a pantomime cow, a little white bull, urchins and factory workers. The compere and 'opera buff' was Gordon Eddison.

The performance impressed the music judge Alan Morrison and entertainment judge Stan Lippeat to lead them to victory. The band won several first prizes for the the best bass (tuba) section; outstanding soloist, solo trombone player Dan Eddison; most entertaining item The bull fight; musical content and overall performance.

This is an outstanding result for a small community band that was competing against nine other much larger community and school bands.

It is a testament to all the hard work teaching and preparation provided by Samantha Harrison and her back up team.

Ages in the band range from eight to18 and there are both girls and boys. The band gets an invitation to perform at the Sage Centre at Gateshead in November as part of the World FamousBrass in Concert series which will feature championship bands such as Brighouse & Rastrick, Grimethorpe Colliery and Fodens.
