Fans storm pitch as Halifax Town avoid relegation

DESPITE a 2-1 defeat in the last game of the season Halifax Town have survived to play another day in the Blue Square Premier.

A loud cheer erupted from the hundred-strong crowd who turned out to watch the Shaymen's final battle against Stevenage Borough as news of a 2-2 draw at Weymouth's Wessex Stadium filtered through.

The fans knew the final scores had saved Town from relegation by just one crucial point.

Delighted, an emotional blue and white army stormed the pitch at the Shay, jumping up and down, hugging one another and congratulating the players.

The result was a huge relief for the supporters who went through the same rollercoaster of emotions last year when Halifax also left it until the last game to secure their place in the league.

Stevenage were their opponents in the 2007 game too but Halifax beat them 2-1 in that equally tense match.
