Fax stars join trust's drive to help kids

CALDERDALE Community Coaching Trust is keeping youngsters off the streets and on the sports pitches.

The group was set up four years ago to bring sport to children and is going from strength to strength.

Their message is being highlighted as part of the Courier's Join Our Club campaign – aimed at encouraging people of all ages to be more active.

The trust was recently awarded charitable status and has just signed up a new member to the committee – businessman Saghir Hussain, of Ziggy's Spice House in Carlton Street, Halifax and Ziggy's A Star Cars.

Mr Hussain already sponsors a Sunday football league but he says he is interested in helping the trust encourage young people into all sports.

"I want to help get kids off the street and give them an interest.

"It's not just about football, it's all sports," he said.

The trust carries out a range of work with young people including employing four Halifax Rugby League Club players to pass on their skills.

Fax prop Frank Watene said they enjoy working in the community and receive good feedback from the youngsters they are helping.

Jas Chatha of Chatha's off-licences, who is one of the trustees, said: "We want to give something back to the community.

"Part of it is providing good role models for young people through the rugby players."

The trust is also involved in recruiting youngsters for the team's cheerleading squad the Bluebells, has sports skills camps, works with Eureka, Calderdale Council and police, and goes into schools across the district teaching different activites and about healthy living.

Malcolm Kielty of the coaching trust said he hoped the success would continue, one day possibly bringing their own sports centre to work from.
