First foray into politics for six

YOUNG people will make their first foray into politics tonight at hustings for the Calderdale Youth Parliament elections.

The six hopefuls vying to represent the district's youth are: Blessing Eze, 17, from Sowerby Bridge High School, Shamaila Gul, 17, from Halifax High School, Samuel Mitchell, 14, from Park Lane High School, Andrew Greenwood, 17, from Greenhead College, and Bradley Moore, 14, and Kyle Moore, 17, both from Ryburn Valley High School.

Anne Gomersall, Calderdale Council's senior participation worker for children and young people, said: "It is the first chance for them to say what they stand for."

After the event, in the council chamber at Halifax Town Hall, candidates will have to manage a campaign and canvass votes, with ballot boxes already in schools, pupil referral units and youth centres.

Votes will be counted at Halifax Town Hall on February 25, when two candidates will be selected as members, and another two will become deputies.

They will hold their positions for two years, and will be trained to represent young people and the issues that affect them.

Mrs Gomersall said: "The young people that have been involved this year had quite a lot of input in safe transport, and a campaign called Fares Fair for more reasonably priced transport."

She said getting involved gives candidates a vital CV boost whether they pursue a career in politics or not.

"Their confidence and self-esteem just goes through the roof, and it is a really good voice for all young people in Calderdale."
