Fish shop burglars caught in the act

TWO burglars are in custody after admitting breaking into a Sowerby Bridge fish and chip shop.

Andrew Gallagher, 45, and Simon Tatum, 32, were found inside Friendly Fisheries, Burnley Road, Friendly, after a neighbour alerted police.

Both men were before Calderdale Magistrates' Court on Saturday after they were caught at around 1.15am on Thursday.

Tom Snape, prosecuting, said: "A witness heard some banging noises coming from the shop.

"She kept observations and saw one male at the side of the fish shop in an alleyway.

"She was suspicious about that and rang the police."

Officers found Gallagher just inside the shop and a police dog tracked down Tatum, who was hiding inside.

Tatum, of no fixed address, also pleaded guilty to burgling a sandwich shop in Main Road, Denholme, between August 5 and 6.

His blood was found at the scene, the court heard.

He also admitted failing to appear at another case at Bradford Magistrates' Court in April.

The offences breach a suspended sentence imposed by a York judge last July for another burglary.

Calderdale magistrates remanded him in custody. He will appear via video link for sentence on September 7.

Gallagher, of Runswick Terrace, Bradford, was also remanded and will be produced for sentence on September 8.
