'Flashmob' planned on Facebook descends on town square
WONDERED what was going on in Hebden Bridge last Saturday?
For five minutes a group of 20 people stopped to pose as statues in St George's Square.
Then, as quickly as they had stopped, they were moving again, leaving passers-by baffled.
The incident was a pre-orchestrated "flashmob", organised via the internet social network site Facebook and e-mails.
A flashmob is a large group of people who arrive spontaneously, perform an often inexplicable action, and then depart.
Childminder and mum Katherine Thomas, who lives in the town, organised the flashmob.
She said: "It's part of a national event called the UK Big Freeze. I read about it and decided I wanted to be part of it."
In total 25 groups took part, all stopping still at 12.30pm on Saturday.
"It was good to do something a bit random," said Katherine.
The flashmob craze started in 2003 and has spread across the globe.
