Flats ban on Sita's boxes: Kerbside welcome boost
KERBSIDE Calderdale has become recyclers by "royal" appointment.
Residents at The Royal Apartments, Free School Lane, Savile Park, Halifax, have successfully banned SITA recycling boxes from their development.
The Royal, the former site of the Royal Halifax Infirmary, has reinstated Kerbside's black recycling boxes.
Richard Durgan, of the Royal Residents Committee, said: "Kerbside has always provided an excellent service and the business model is one we wish to support."
Kerbside chief Paul Brannigan said they appreciated the support. "We have always viewed our campaign as being conducted on behalf of the people we serve and support like this is a tremendous boost to our morale."
Calderdale Council's waste manager, Malcolm Akroyd, said: "Residents are free to choose how and where they recycle their waste."
Chris Harris has been a resident at McCrea Ward, The Royal, for four years and has recently joined the Residents' Committee.
She was instrumental in ensuring there were recycling facilities at The Royal when it was being developed.
She said "We wanted to do this because Kerbside is a not-for-profit, charitable organisation and the people who work there have learning disabilities or are long-term unemployed.
"We all need some kind of employment to feel a valuable member of society. Society would collapse without organisations like Kerbside.
"People have a right to stand up for what they believe in."
A spokeswoman for SITA said: "The management of the Royal flats have made their decision.
"SITA UK, however, remain commited to providing an excellent service and would urge everyone to continue recycling to the benefit of everyone in Calderdale."
