Fun on their final frontier

THE world of space travel landed at St Catherine's Catholic High School for a science, technology, engineering and maths curriculum day.

The normal school timetable was suspended to allow pupils to experience how the subjects are used in the exploration of space.

Bob Pratt, head of science at the school at Holmfield, Halifax, said: "It is important that our pupils get an insight into how these subjects are very closely linked and how they are fundamental to one of the most exciting fields of human achievement.

"As a recently redesignated technology college it fits in very well with our specialism."

Pupils took part in practical activities, including making and launching rockets, learned about living in space, views of space in a planetarium and had a close-up look at a real rocket, the Skybolt.

They were also given classroom and computer-based activities on the history of space exploration and the scale of the universe.

Mr Pratt said: "Pupils were given a real insight into life in space and how science and engineering have exciting applications."

Connor Wainwright, winner of the Rocket Scientist of the Day, said: "We had a really fun day learning how to build rockets and how they had to be aerodynamic to fly further."

Pupils Ellie Prendergast and Amy Bean said: "We found the talk on life in space really exciting, learning how the astronauts survive and their diet."

And Rachel Booth said: "I really enjoyed developing and testing my rocket design and trying it out."

"It was great to see a real life rocket up close and listen to the designer," said Millie Allchin.
