Fury at Kerbside's plight

THE controversy over Kerbside and residents' fury at its plight dominated talks about rubbish collection.

The meeting – part of the Upper Valley Area Forum – was set up for residents to raise their concerns about how a new wheelie bin system will work.

But most of the discussion was about the row over Kerbside and refuse contractor Sita UK, with people dem-anding to know why Calderdale Council had not done more to help the social enterprise.

Calderdale councillor Peter Coles (Lib Dem, Luddenden Foot) said: "I don't want to leave this meeting without the strength of feeling being passed on to Calderdale Council. We care about recycling and the way it is collected."

Calderdale's director for health and social care Jonathan Philips said every bidder for the waste disposal contract talked about working with social enterprises, including Kerbside. When Sita won the deal the council could not insist it worked with specific groups because of European competition rules.
