Gang beat up blind Azeem in park
A YOUNG man registered as blind was attacked by eight youths as he walked through a park in broad daylight.
Azeem Afzal, 20, was walking home to Mayfield Grove, Halifax, with two friends when he was pounced on by the gang.
Now his father is worried someone else will be assaulted in People's Park, Halifax, where he claims half the security cameras are not working.
Nadeem Afzal, 44, said: "This is a public place, it should be safe but clearly it is not."
He said Azeem was confronted by the teenagers who shouted abuse then showered him with punches until he fell to the ground.
Partially sighted Azeem had severe bruising to his face, a suspected broken nose, cuts and bruising.
He said he had never met his attackers before.
Mr Afzal, 44, said: "He rang me and said 'Dad, come and save me'." An ambulance took Azeem to Calderdale Royal Hospital.
Mr Afzal contacted the council to see if any cameras had captured the attack. But he claims he was told two are broken.
A council spokesman admitted there was an intermittent fault on two of them, adding: "We will check the other cameras to try and identify the culprits."
