Gang of 10 in brick attack on fire crew
A FIRE crew came under attack from brick-throwing yobs when it turned out to a rubbish fire in Halifax.
Firefighters were at the blaze at Selby, Abbey Park, Illingworth, and had put the flames out when about 10 youths began hurling bricks at the fire engine.
One of the group also had a water pistol, which they fired at the crew.
The fire engine was damaged in the incident but none of the firefighters were hurt.
Illingworth station manager Andy Farrell said the fire service was working with police, Pennine Housing and Calderdale Council to catch those responsible and to prevent similar incidents happening again.
He said: "This kind of behaviour is totally unacceptable and we will not tolerate it.
"This is an isolated incident but we are working with our partners to address the problems.
"We are looking at issues such as rubbish being left on the streets in the area, which some youths set fire to in order to get us called out in the first place."
Firefighters have been speaking to homeowners about fire-safety issues and offering free home fire-safety checks since the incident on Sunday at 8.40pm.
For a home safety check ring 0800 587 4536.
