Gardeners beat the weather to shine at show
THE best amateur gardeners, florists, bakers and artists showed off their talents at a horticultural show.
Tasty vegetables, glorious flowers and tempting cakes were just some of the exhibits shown at the Southowram Horticultural and Allotments Society's 73rd show.
There were 31 handicraft entries, 43 children's entries, 141 vegetable exhibits, 29 photographs, 38 floral art displays, 85 flowers and a choice of 83 baked goods at Withinfields Primary School, Law Lane, Southowram.
Margaret Coates, society secretary, said: "Given the weather conditions we've had there were some quality exhibits in the vegetable and flower sections.
"The jam entries have gone up this year and the children's entries are good, with our Mr Potato Heads."
Judge Roy Jackson, 78, of Huddersfield, said: "I wasn't expecting so many entries due to the bad weather."
Betty Barlow, of Withinfields, Southowram, entered gladioli and peach roses, for which she earned first and second prize.
She said: "It has been hard work with the weather and pests but my roses are new for me this year.
"They help make the show more spectacular. The entries are exceptional."
Thomas Allen, 12, of Woodside, Boothtown, Halifax, entered floating flowers, crispy buns, a doily, greetings cards and photographs of rain and a red boat.
He said: "It's a family tradition that we enter every year. I am pleased with what I entered and what I won."
Saskia Uttley, eight, of Grange Heights, Southowram, won first prize for her crispy buns.
She said: "I made them with chocolate, Rice Krispies, Smarties, Skittles and Chocolate Buttons. I'm pleased I won because they are very tasty."
