Glue attack on Halifax shops was a political protest - claim
VANDALS who attacked more than 40 Halifax shops with glue could be linked to a political organisation, it was reported today.
A call to the Evening Courier suggested the attack on businesses around Halifax town centre may be part of a protest against corporations using cheap or sweatshop labour.
Staff at the stores were unable to open for several hours on Saturday after the gang glued up door locks on premises in Market Street, Cornmarket and Woolshops.
Workers at one store had to remove a window to gain entry.
Police investigating the attack were gathering CCTV evidence from indivual shops to trawl film for clues.
More than 40 shops in Halifax lost business after the gang glued up the locks. Dozens of staff couldn't get into stores in the Woolshops and Market Street area.
All staff could do was hang around for several hours while locksmiths and maintenance men turned up to free the Superglued doors.
Among the shops hit in the stick-up were Tesco, River Island, Going Places, Costa, McDonald's, Gamestation, Superdrug and JJB – where staff had a window taken out so they could get in.
Police were called and spent the morning taking reports from shop staff.
Lynda Connell, deputy manager at Top Shop, had arrived for work at 7.30am. She said: "I thought I was going a bit loopy.
"The key wouldn't go in the lock. I thought it was me and I'd got the wrong key.
"But then the manager from another store came over and told me lots of shops had had their locks glued.
"It's unbelieveable. What a way to spend a morning."
Christine Greenwood, team leader at Costa coffee shop, said: "I couldn't believe it.
"I thought it was me doing something wrong at first.
"But then, as more people started to arrive for work, we figured out what had happened.
"We think about 40 shops have been targeted in total, all across the town."
Dexter Pearson, of Gamestation, said it was shocking and added: "It's been a waste of everyone's time.
"We've been left stuck out here all because someone wanted a joke."
Police are investigating and hope to recover CCTV footage from the area to help identify those responsible.
