Goodbye lovely cherry trees - cut down to make way for Broad Street development

WORK has resumed on the site of Halifax's multi-million pound Broad Street centre – with the felling of cherry trees.

Clearing of the site will pave the way for a hotel, shops, restaurants, a multi-screen cinema, a bowling alley, a bingo hall and a 400-space car park.

But passers-by were furious when they saw the trees felled yesterday.

Jan Atkinson said: "There is so much space on that site, it does not make sense," she said.

"They are beautiful in spring. I could not believe my eyes when I saw what they were doing."

Work has started again on the site 18 months after the demolition of the Netto supermarket and the Star Hotel, in Orange Street.

Calderdale Council's economy and environment director Ian Gray said: "We are currently in the process of clearing all the outstanding minor planning conditions with a view to work starting on site in late spring."

Leeds-based Gregory Property Holdings has been cautious about announcing a start date because of the recession and the fragile state of the property market. Yesterday spokesman David Brimblecombe was unavailable for comment.

A huge public outcry persuaded the council to change its mind about felling mature cherry trees in George Street, Halifax, in 2004.
