Guitar comes top in contest
A GUITARIST and a marimba player have triumphed in the inaugural Young Musician of the Year competition.
The Rotary Club of Halifax held the contest at Ryburn Valley High School, Sowerby, and five Calderdale secondary schools – Calder High, Ryburn Valley High, North Halifax Grammar School, Sowerby Bridge High and Rishworth – took part in the day-long contest.
About 90 students took part either as individuals or in groups and there was a high standard of musicianship.
The winners of each category went head-to-head for the final winners in two age groups - Years 7 to 10 and 11 to 13. Fingal Plumpton, a Year 10 student at Calder High, was the winner of the first group. He wowed the judges with his classical guitar playing.
In the Year 11 to 13 group the winner was Harry Meredith, in Year 13 at Rishworth School, on marimba.
Liz Wilde, chief executive of Northern Orchestral Enterprises Ltd, based at Dean Clough, Halifax, said: "Both were very deserving winners, playing exceptionally well and displaying good musicianship, technical ability and excellent overall performance."
