Hairdressing championships: report and video
CHAMPION curlers and crimpers showed they are a cut above the rest at the Yorkshire Hairdressing Championships.
There were no bad hair days in sight as stylists snipped and blow-dried against the clock - and each other - during the annual event at Jumpin' Jaks, Commercial Street, Halifax.
Tamara Cole, of Cutting Corner, Halifax, was awarded the Ladies' Junior Yorkshire Champion title and Joe Mercer, of Taylor and Co, Brighouse is the Men's Senior Yorkshire Champion.
Trainees and senior stylists competed in eight categories, including designing styles for fashion conscious men and women, evening dos and wacky, colourful creations.
The hairdressers had a limited time to create the right look before judges rated their efforts. They scored points for shape, finish and technical merit.
Phillip Cooling, competition secretary, said: "All entries have been well competed for. It's a popular event because people love showing off what they can do.
"There are some stars in the making here."
Len Jackson, competition director, also said: "It given hairdressers the chance to do something more inventive. It's an exciting event for the industry."
Sharon Taylor, 38, of Bradshaw, Halifax, modelled for stylists at Anthony James hair salon, Silver Street, Halifax.
Her curly mohican with diamante was entered into the evening style category.
"There is some fantastic young talent here today and I love my hair," she said.
Also modelling for Anthony James in the fashion conscious female category was Hayley Whiteley, 22.
"It's a brilliant atmosphere. And I'm sure there are some budding Nicky Clarke's here."
Tutor Helen Chorley travelled from Warrington Collegiate with a team of seven stylists for the hair-raising event.
She said: "Putting them under pressure shows what they can really do."
Michael Richards, 19, is a senior stylist at Taylor and Co, Bethel Street, Brighouse.
He said: "It's brilliant fun. There are no everyday styles here."
Belinda Dwyer, 10, of Jon Richard salon, Cleckheaton, styled 18-year-old Heather Gregory's hair into a stunning pink and purple style.
Belinda said: "It has taken five hours worth of colouring and five months of training. It's an exciting event - a challenge."
Heather also said: "Everyone wants to talk to me with hair like this."
