Halifax set to be 'fake-free': Council joins campaign to stamp out counterfeit goods
CALDERDALE is clamping down on counterfeit goods.
We will be the first in West Yorkshire to get behind the Real Deal campaign, aimed at tackling fakes trading.
Calderdale Council said it has been following a "zero-tolerance" approach to counterfeit goods at Calderdale markets over the last 12 months.
Now it is joining a national campaign to make markets "fake-free" places to shop and trade.
John Walker, markets manager, said: "We want our customers to be able to shop in our markets with confidence.
"A lot of fraudulent activity happens in markets and often the products can be dangerous or poorly made, so we want to put a total stop to it."
The council said it has been working with police and trading standards to ban counterfeit goods traders from markets and car-boot sales.
The announcement comes hot on the heels of a police raid at Halifax Borough Market in which a haul of suspected stolen goods were seized.
Three men – aged 32, 25 and 23 – and two teenage boys – aged 13 and 15 – were arrested in connection with the market raid last month. All were released on police bail pending further inquiries.
