Halifax to London rail link given go-ahead

Halifax to London direct trains have today been given the go-ahead.

The announcement was made by the Office of Rail Regulation at 10am. It follows a four-year campaign by rail company Grand Union and the Evening Courier.

Three trains a day each way will connect Halifax and London. Services from Bradford will call at Halifax, Brighouse, Wakefield Kirkgate, Pontefract Monkhill and Doncaster.

The journey from Halifax should take around 2 hours 45 minutes.

Rail buff and Calderdale councillor Keith Watson said it was fantastic news.

Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Halifax Philip Allott also welcomed the decision.

He said: "A direct connection to Halifax has been long over due.

"The new service will not only create around 50 more jobs in West Yorkshire but it will also reduce the pressure on the M62."

Jubilant managing director of Grand Union Ian Yeowart expressed his delight.

"The award is fantastic news and comes after a considerable amount of time and investment," he said.

"We now look forward to delivering on our promise.

"The support and commitment of the many stakeholders has helped to make this a reality.

"We must now get on with the significant task of preparing for operations."

Mr Yeowart said the Office of Rail Regulation clearly recognised the importance of the new services serving around one million people.
