Have your say on next step of our Renaissance

THE next stage of an ambitious vision for the future of Halifax has gone on display.

The regeneration masterplan is being displayed as part of a public consultation to decide the shape of the town centre over the next 20 years.

The proposals, part of the Calderdale Council Streets Ahead Renaissance Prog-ramme, include rejuvenating the Piece Hall, creating a new town square and transport interchange, and improving pedestrian links to Dean Clough, Beacon Hill, and People's Park.

The project, launched in 2004, has already seen the refurbishment of Elsie Whiteley Mill, the Westgate canopy and the restoration of Somerset House.

A new cinema and bowling alley are also in the pipeline at the Broad Street Plaza development.

Calderdale Council is now seeking input on the plans, which are to be drafted into a supplementary planning document.

Jo Budgen, regeneration officer, said: "It will give guidance on planning related issues to encourage regeneration and sustainable development. Community consultation is central to this process."

A futher six-week consultation period will then take place in spring, before the paper is adopted into planning procedures in summer.

The plans are on display at Halifax Central Library until tomorrow and then on Friday and Saturday. Comment forms will be available.

Christmas shoppers can also view the display outside Marks and Spencer in the Woolshops, Halifax, on Thursday between noon and 8pm.
