HBOS staff are told: You must wait for decisions - there will be no 'big bang'
HBOS staff will have to wait for firm decisions on the future of the Trinity Road headquarters in Halifax as speculation mounts over job losses.
Both Lloyds TSB and banking union Accord distanced themselves from talk that thousands of local jobs are now at increased risk.
Halifax MP Linda Riordan said the uncertainty was unsettling for staff but she remained confident on the business case for Halifax and Yorkshire.
Fears have grown since Lloyds TSB announced it would keep the Edinburgh headquarters but wanted to cut costs by an extra 500 million annually. No guarantees have been given on its operations in Halifax.
A Lloyds TSB spokeswoman said that was because no decision had been taken on regional centres.
"The Mound will be the Scottish headquarters but we've never said anything about other centres across the UK," she said.
"We recognise staff do need to know, but no decisions have been taken yet on the different areas of the business."
Accord union general secretary Ged Nichols said other than the decision on the Scottish HQ everything was speculation. "There will be no big bang. Nothing will be shutting down on Day One," he said. "There is no information available yet and that is good because the processes have not started."
Shareholder approval for the takeover has yet to be given and Mr Nichols hopes the fear of job losses could be eased through natural wast-age as the new bank looks to cut costs through to 2012.
Mrs Riordan met Lloyds TSB officials on Monday and said the bank had been made aware of the strong case for keeping operations in Halifax thro-ugh the expertise of its staff and its location.
Regional minister Rosie Winterton and Yorkshire Forward chief Tom Riordan met Lloyds TSB chairman Sir Victor Blank and the bank's group executive director of retail banking Helen Weir yesterday.
Both sides issued a statement saying the meeting was positive and constructive.
