HBOS takeover: MP lobbying Darling and Brown at Labour Party Conference over Halifax jobs

THE crisis engulfing HBOS has led to intense lobbying at the Labour Party Conference being held in Manchester this week.

Halifax MP Linda Riordan has spoken to chancellor Alistair Darling and expects to meet with Prime Minister Gordon Brown on the return to Parliament.

Today, she was meeting HBOS and Lloyds TSB chiefs along with treasury ministers and union representatives.

Yorkshire Forward chief executive Tim Riordan is also in Manchester holding talks with Mrs Riordan and Regional Minister for Yorkshire and Humberside Rosie Winterton.

Crucial to all the talks is a commitment that the 6,500 HBOS staff in Halifax won't lose their jobs at the expense of other centres.

Mrs Riordan, backed by Ms Winterton, said she wanted an immediate reassurance that the town won't suffer disproportionately from the impending business review.

"I am pleased to have secured this vital meeting with treasury ministers and Rosie Winterton to discuss the future of jobs in Halifax. Clearly the Government are willing to listen, but I want reassurance that jobs will be saved – not only in Edinburgh but in Halifax too," said Mrs Riordan.

The Conference has also passed a resolution from union Amacus over the security of jobs within HBOS.

On Thursday a public meeting takes place at the NALGO bar, Northgate House, Halifax, at 6.30 pm.

"Members of HBOS management and senior UNITE officials will be present and I am confident that if we continue to speak loud enough in Halifax, we will be heard," said Mrs Riordan.
