HBOS takeover: 'Sign our petition and rescue jobs'

A PETITION is being launched aimed at protecting HBOS jobs in Halifax.

Forms will be distributed outside Halifax Town Hall at 9.50am tomorrow calling for jobs to be kept in Calderdale in the bank's link-up with Lloyds TSB.

"We want as many people as possible to demonstrate support for the bank and employees," said co-organiser Philip Allott, Conservative prospective Parliamentary candidate for Halifax.

His colleague, Coun Craig Whittaker, candidate for the Calder Valley, said it was important that jobs should be protected in Halifax, not just Scotland.

Shadow Trade spokeswoman Julie Kirkbride – born in Halifax – is arranging for the petition to be handed in to Downing Street.

Calderdale Council has promised to step up its efforts to help the Halifax bank, its employees, savers and investors.

In a joint statement, political group leaders said: "At times like this we see the best of the people of Calderdale and you only have to read the Courier to know everybody is pulling together."

Two major shareholders of the Halifax have thrown their weight behind the merger – under its original terms.

The backing from M & G and Standard Life Investments is expected to sweep away fears the takeover deal by Lloyds TSB would either not take place or the terms would be changed.
