'His family think I am behind this' - 'honour killing' widow breaks down in tears in court
The widow of a man shot dead in what has been branded an honour killing broke down in tears as she told a court she felt she was being blamed.
Yasmin Bibi Mehmood, 25, said she could not believe the man she married in secret had been murdered.
"I did not want him to die," said Mrs Mehmood, "I wanted him to be with me and lead a happy life with him and my dream would have come true."
She told Leeds Crown Court that she had received a phone call from her husband's family on Saturday blaming her for 29-year-old Mian Shahid Mehmood's death.
"Who am I going to tell the things in my heart that I am going through," she said. "They are thinking I am behind this - they say, 'you are the one who got our son murdered'."
Mr Mehmood was found with two gunshot wounds in his back at Great Edge Road, Warley, on February 11 last year.
The prosecution allege that Mrs Mehmood's family took exception to her marriage when they found out, and two of her brothers - Arza Khan, 27, and Tahir Mahmood, 22, of Parkinson Lane, Halifax - took out a contract on her husband's life.
They are charged alongside Naveed Mahmood, 23, of Granville Road, Sheffield, John Reeves, 54, of Adlington Road, Sheffield, and Sam Lee, 30, of Deerlands Avenue, Sheffield.
All five deny murdering Mr Mehmood.
His widow was made a hostile witness on Friday after she refused to agree with the statement she made to police following the shooting.
Today she continued to deny that her brothers had ever been violent towards her.
She admitted she did not want to be seen with her husband and used to make him lie down in the car when they went out together.
Mrs Mehmood said she was confused at the time of making her statement and claimed she said things to get her brothers into trouble.
The court heard that Mrs Mehmood has continued to live at home with her family at Parkinson Lane since her husband's murder.
