'Hopwood Triangle' £14m plan

UP to £14 million has been earmarked to redevelop what has been dubbed the "Hopwood Triangle".

Calderdale Council and Yorkshire Forward agreed to promote the scheme in 2007 and the development agency board has now said it will put in extra money, reflecting the site's importance.

Land and buildings at the bottom of Hopwood Lane, Halifax, have been semi-derelict and underused for years

The aim is to create a showpiece development that will be an entrance to the surrounding area, which includes the landmark Elsie Whiteley Innovation Centre.

"It will also provide space for businesses in the centre that will need to expand", said Calderdale Council's regeneration and development spokeswoman Amanda Byrne.

"Projects like this are vital to give investors confidence in the area and to ensure the district is well placed to emerge from the recession," said Coun Byrne (Con, Sower-by Bridge). "It will also ensure local jobs are created in the construction and the development."

The scheme is tied into the Halifax Renaissance Project, which is planning the wider regeneration of the town.

Efforts have begun to buy the site and the council has said that it will use compulsory purchase powers if necessary.

Cityheart, of Chester, has been chosen as the preferred developer.

There will be further consultation in March before a planning application is submitted.
