Horrific moment as car ran into crowd
A YOUNG woman has told how a pleasant summer evening turned into a nightmare.
A black Renault Megane ploughed into a crowd outside the Pack Horse pub, Cain Lane, Southowram, at 7.50pm on Saturday and left a 50-year-old man with serious injuries.
Steve Hainsworth, of Queen's Drive, Southowram, underwent surgery at Calderdale Royal Hospital and has had steel plates inserted in each hip and treatment for leg injuries.
He was with his daughters, Nicola Yates, 26, and Adele Ode, 27, also of Southowram. Nicola needed 18 stitches in a calf wound.
Adele escaped injury. She said she and her sister had been sunbathing outside the pub when their father joined them after watching the World Cup at home.
"I was sitting on the wall with Dad to my right and Nic to the left,'' said Adele. "Nic told me she heard people screaming but I didn't hear anything. Then the car smashed Dad against the wall.
"We were screaming and trying to push the car away. I rang 999 but the operator couldn't understand what I was saying."
Mr Hainsworth's partner, Bernie Walton, rushed to the scene. She paid tribute to a doctor whom she only knew as Kate, who was in the pub with her partner.
They tended Mr Hainsworth, a bus driver with Halifax Joint Committee, and kept him conscious until emergency crews arrived.
"She was in the right place at the right time and I want to thank her personally,'' said Ms Walton.
He is expected to remain in hospital for a few weeks and then faces a lengthy recovery process.
Pub licensee Michelle Martin, 40, said the accident had stunned regulars who had started a collection for Mr Hainsworth.
She said children and adults were milling around and the accident could have been even worse.
Her daughter, Rebecca Martin, 18, saw the car approaching from Law Lane.
"I thought it is not going to make it round the bend and then it crashed into the kerb and hit Mr Hainsworth and the wall.''
She and others pulled the car away.
Miss Martin ran to fetch Ms Walton who arrived with her daughter, Karen Hesselden, of Anne's Court, Southowram.
A man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and drink-driving.
