Illegal immigrants from Vietnam found hidden in Halifax bound wheelie bins
HIDING among wheelie bins, seven Vietnamese dreamt of starting a new life in Halifax.
But they came a cropper when UK Border Agency officers based in France discovered them in a lorry.
Four men and three women, all believed to be Vietnamese nationals, were attempting to get to the UK by hiding among a load of wheelie bins in a Hungarian freight vehicle on their way to Calderdale Council.
They were found during a search of the vehicle by Calais-based UK Border Agency officers before the lorry could drive on to the freight shuttle on the Channel tunnel.
About an hour later officers discovered a further 15 illegal immigrants - 10 Iraqi, three Iranian, one Eritrean and one Syrian - during the search of a Spanish freight vehicle carrying tomatoes headed for Camblesforth, Selby.
The agency will now investigate whether the hauliers were responsible.
If found to be responsible, they could face a substantial fine.
Agency director Tom Dowdall, who heads operations in northern France, said: "These are examples of the increasing high risks that are taken by would-be illegal immigrants and those who facilitate illegal immigration."
