It's fun on the run to mark Halifax Harriers' 125th anniversary
SERIOUS athletes and fun runners will join forces to help the Halifax Harriers celebrate their 125th anniversary.
The Harriers will mark the milestone anniversary with a Halifax town centre 5k competitive run and a 1k fancy dress fun run on May 31.
The events will raise cash for the Community Foundation for Calder-dale and a charity to be chosen by the new Mayor-elect of Calderdale, Arshad Mahmood.
Nigel Rigg, vice-chairman of Halifax Harriers, said: "We have five established races throughout the year ranging from road, trail and fell running.
"But we decided to have a special event for our anniversary that will attract lots of people who perhaps don't normally run.
"We wanted to do it in the town centre because we wanted it to be for the people of Halifax and to also support Calderdale Neighbours' Day at the Piece Hall, Halifax, on May 29."
The run will begin at Commercial Street and finish at The Piece Hall, Halifax.
The entry limit is 500 and runners should be registered and changed at North Bridge Leisure Centre by 9.30am.
Prizes are up for grabs for those first to fly past the finish line and for the most imaginative fancy dress.
The 5k run costs 4 for affiliated runners, 5 for unaffiliated entrants and 1 for fun runners. The main race will be 5 or 6 if runners register on the day.
The Harriers hope to raise 1,000.
The event has been organised to coincide with Calderdale Neighbours Day, organsied by Action Halifax, on May 29 from 11am to 4pm.
Rob Billson, Urban programme manager for Action Halifax, said participants can also enjoy an event at the Piece Hall called Get Running Get Healthy, which will have information about the sport, music and stalls.
"Every year the Community Foundation holds the 24-hour South Pennine Challenge, but we are doing this instead to raise money for the foundation and to support the Harriers' 125th anniversary.
"We hope everyone will come and get involved," he said,
Volunteers are also needed to marshal the event.
