'It's time Kerbside / Sita issue was sorted out' – council chief
OWEN Williams, Calderdale Council's chief executive, has said the situation between Kerbside and refuse contractor Sita UK must be resolved.
In a letter to councillors Mr Williams said the situation was clearly not satisfactory.
"But at some point we will have to start shifting our resources from trying to resolve this dispute to focusing on managing the most significant change that we have ever asked residents to make in respect of refuse collection."
While Sita is responsible for collecting refuse from all 90,000 homes in Calderdale, Kerbside is continuing to collect recyclables from 25,000 properties between Halifax and Todmorden.
In an effort to explain exactly how talks between to two broke down Mr Williams has given councillors seven pages of facts and figures.
Meanwhile, Conservative councillors have been accused of turning their backs on Kerbside.
Liberal Democrat group leader Janet Battye told the health and social care panel: "There is a serious absence of any political leadership in this by the Conservative Cabinet.
"They are ignoring the clear wish of councillors to get the arrangement with Sita sorted out. When Sita won the contract, it said that it looked forward to establishing a partnership with Kerbside. This has not happened!."
Councillor Battye (Calder) said people who use the Kerbside service value it and wanted it to continue.
The directors of Kerbside have announced they have enough money to guarantee the wages of their employees until the end of January 2009, subject to continued public support.
